Stansted started life in 1942 during the Second World War as a base for the United States Army Air Force. It is also London's third airport and an extension to its terminal was completed in 2002, it is now capable of handling well over 20 million passengers a year.
As one of the UK’s busiest airports, London Stansted Airport sees more than 18 million passengers pass through its gates annually. Stansted is situated 30 miles northeast of London on the M11 motorway. European flights make up the majority of traffic at the airport, but there are also plenty of US flights that pass through.
One terminal handles all flights at Stansted, with the airport’s number of worldwide destinations surpassing 100. Arrivals and Check-in are situated on the ground floor of the terminal, while Departures is located on the first floor. Both major airline and budget airline carriers operate out of the airport.
Travellers to Stansted Airport will find a variety of facilities including a chapel, ATMs, baby-changing rooms, left luggage and lost property services, currency exchanges booths and excellent children’s facilities. Stansted has a multitude of shops on both sides of security . Some stores available are Boots, World News, WH Smith and The Body Shop. Duty-free outlets can be found in Departures. Plenty of restaurants, snack stands and bars are located throughout the airport. However, the bulk of restaurants are located in Departures.
Internet kiosks can be found before and after security. There is also a child-free executive lounge at London Stansted that is available to passengers flying on all airlines. Nearby Enterprise House offers conference facilities for business travellers.
Transport and parking at Stansted Airport
Train, taxi, limousine and bus transport options are available for travel to London and surrounding areas. The Stansted Express rail service is available seven days a week and runs from the airport to Liverpool Street Station regularly throughout the day.
Taxis and limousines are easily available at the airport and offer the most convenient form of transport into the city, though not necessarily the cheapest. Options for taking a bus into London or to nearby cities are numerous. Bus services operate from Stansted Airport Coach Station to London throughout the day. The Terravision shuttle runs an hourly service to London Victoria Coach Station. Alternatively, there are also Arriva bus services, the Airbus A6 or the Jetlink service to take you to various parts of the region.
Stansted Airport offers valet, short-term, mid-term and long-term parking. Short-term parking is located near to the terminal and is free for the first 15 minutes. The mid-term and long-term car parks are situated farther away and are served by courtesy buses. Mid-term and long-term parking can be pre-booked. Valet or Meet and Greet parking must be pre-booked. Disabled parking is offered in the short-term and long-term parking lots. To pay for parking, take a ticket at the barrier on your way in and then pay when you return at the pay stations in Arrivals, or alternatively you can pay by credit card at the barrier on exit.
